Wizard of oz
Many people know the famous movie the wizard of oz, but now this school’s drama department has decided to perform it in July by the year 10’s.
As year 7 students are aware Mr Cooper came forward in assembly last Tuesday and announced that he needs Geordie munchkins for the year 10 production. A one hour session was held on Friday 5th to give pupils the chance to see some of the wizard of oz movie. This opportunity was given so the year 7’s could see how they would have to perform. Auditions will be held on Friday 12th in the drama department (hall); so get yourself along there and audition! Contribution from Year 7 English
Cookii Doh - The Recipe for Business Success

The Cookii Doh Team
Seventeen teenagers from John Spence CHS, North Shields, are proud to be representing both their school and the North Tyneside area, at Regional Finals of the Young Enterprise Company Programme in June.
This comes as a result of their success in the Area Final at the end of April, where they competed against twelve young Companies from across the North East. They won several awards, including Joint Overall Winners, which they share with Central High Independent School.
The John Spence students, aged 14-15, have worked tirelessly out of school hours, for the past six months, to establish their company – Cookii Doh. Ably mentored by local business woman, Sue Kell, and JSCHS teacher, Louise Bray, they have designed, manufactured, marketed and sold a range of branded clothing and in the process developed a deeper understanding of business.
“We are obviously delighted with our success in competition, but the real reward comes from the knowledge that we have managed to establish a successful small business. Most of us when we leave school will end up working in the business world – we feel we will be able to use this experience to our benefit”: Joe Champken, Managing Director (aged 14).
The future for Cookii Doh? - Cookii Doh have provided t-shirt samples for listing to: Sainsbury’s, The Officer’s Club, Play.com, Joystick Junkies and Next plc. Although the company must be dissolved in June they are currently negotiating a franchise deal.
Well done to all the pupils involved: Joe Champken, Amy Jensen, Kate Murphy, Jessica Leggett, Hannah Leggett, Dean Johnson, Rehanna Bowmer, Matilda Manser, Lois Woodman, Lucy Thompson, Nick Lavin, Jordan McBride, Chris Clements, Ross Foggin, Kallum Whitelaw, Samantha Taylor, Ryan Lilburn . NUFC Enterprise Project
As mentioned in the last newsletter students following the alternative curriculum have been involved in a 10 week block of work based on the business side of Newcastle United Football Club. Five of our students were selected to attend the Foundation's 1st Birthday Party on 28th April. Here they are pictured in the Newcastle United Football shirts that they won at this event for being the most enterprising group of all the schools who had participated in the project.
Customer Service at Starbowl

Year 10 Business Studies students have been carrying out research for their vocational course on ‘How to Keep Customers Happy’. The company Star Bowl at Royal Quays, invited them for a visit, not only to find out about their business and the way it works but also for the students to practice their customer service skills. The students found out about who their main customers are and how they should all be treated. The students were all able to try out their customer service skills in a variety of different situations. This meant that they had to operate the tills at Star Bowl when making a sale, they had to use their computer systems to book lanes and set them up ready for bowling.
A great morning out was had by all, as you can see in some of the photographs around. Thank you to all at Star Bowl for their help and generosity. Contribution from Year 10 Business

Mountain Biking

Year 11 work related group had a fantastic time mountain biking at Hamsterley Forest recently. The visit and activities involved were part of their CoPE Award. Not only did the student have great fun and exercise, they have also learnt how carry out to look after their mountain bikes and how to maintain them. Some of the activities they covered included how to repair a punctured tyre and how to carry out an M check on a mountain bike. While learning the students completed the Red Route which is 14 miles long over some quite difficult terrain, as you can see in some of the images above!
Prior to the visit, the work related group carried out research on Scott and Dawes bikes, their gears and the safety rules associated with mountain biking.

Make your Mark with a Tenner

Year 10 students were given the opportunity to get creative with their business ideas and try to put them into practice. Groups were given £10 and they had to try and create a quick money raising idea and see how much money they could raise in one month. They were also set the task of ensuring that any pupils involved with their idea had some fun! Their ideas have included an ‘Over the Bar’ competition for Years 7 and 8 pupils, a ‘Non-Uniform’ day for Year 10 students and a ‘Prizes Competition’ for all year groups and teachers. Congratulations to all those involved, their activities meant they needed to be organised, keep the accounts of their activity and organise staff to help out at various times.
Not only did the pupils have fun with their creative business ideas, but they raised almost £200 for charities. Amazing work in one month!

Mathstastic!
Wow, not many of us can say we are in the top 10 in the world for anything, but congratulations has to go to Ryan Macciocchi, who is in the Top Ten for completing a Mental Maths Challenge. The competition is an online mental maths challenge for children born in 1997. Ryan is now the English and UK champion, and he will participate in the International Championship Final which takes place between 17th and 31st May. He is up against champions from 15 other countries, such as the USA and China. I'm sure you will agree that this is a huge achievement – good luck Ryan.
‘Round’ to be a success!
John Spence girls have kept their champion status as the U16 Girls North Tyneside Rounders Champions - they have won this competition every year since starting school.
Science Club
Science club is for set 1 children. It is based on experiments and other forms of practical work. Like: dissecting organs, debates, making fireworks and making slippery slime. Science club can open a range of opportunities for potential Isaac Newtons that are interested in science.
In the last few weeks there has been experiments but this week (Wednesday 10th February) they did a different side to science, they had a debate over whether NASA actually sent a rocket to the moon or whether it was all a hoax. Although it wasn’t a practical everybody still had fun doing a debate. Science is very exciting and you can learn a lot of skills for a future in science. Lewis Miller quoted “I like science club because you do lots of experiments,” and Mark Bal commented and the debate “: It was interesting and shows what really happened.” Science club has had a excellent response and everybody is hoping science club carries on with even more enjoyable.
