Learning Support Unit and Learning Mentors
Learning Support Unit and Learning Mentors
The LSU is part of a support structure that includes Learning Mentors. Through a co-ordinated approach they complement the existing school pastoral system and offer support to some of the most disadvantaged students in school.
Ethos
The LSU and Learning Mentors offer a nurturing environment based on mutual respect. The aim is to build confidence and self esteem and equip students with the skills they need to achieve their potential.
Curriculum within the LSU
The LSU is a quiet, calm working environment providing an alternative curriculum for those students who are unable to access the full curriculum due to learning and / or communication, medical, emotional, behavioural difficulties. Teaching and learning is tailored to meet the specific needs of each individual student. Re-integration into mainstream lessons is usually the long term aim but we recognise that individual circumstances can create obstacles to achieving this end.
Learning Mentor Provision
Through one to one mentoring and group sessions they help students develop strategies to overcome barriers to good learning and improved social interaction. The learning mentors play a key role at the beginning of year 7 supporting students who may experience difficulty settling into their new school environment.
Other Features
The LSU and Learning Mentors have students who attend for registration, which offers additional support and a welcome at the beginning of the day.
Students are encouraged to attend the LSU or meet with the Learning Mentors at break times and lunchtimes.
The LSU and mentors have designated separate rooms, a disabled toilet and ground floor access.
