The basics:

The Collection

We have over 5000 volumes in our collection:

Opening hours and IT access

Students in KS3 and KS4 have a fortnightly scheduled visit to the LRC during an English Period.

The LRC is open during morning and lunch time breaks as well as before and after school, for recreational reading, browsing, homework assistance and access to our IT facilities of 17 networked PCs.

Information Services

The Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) is accessible in school via the intranet.  From September 2008 our programme will include induction and orientation for each class.

One-to-one induction sessions of 10 minutes are available outside lesson time for staff and students.

Information Literacy

Departments across the school use the LRC for researching modules of study.

With the guidance of teaching and LRC staff, students learn to search for and evaluate and use appropriate information for the task.

The extras:

The LRC also organises a number of extra-curricular activities for students and staff:

Warhammer and War Games Workshops Club
Scrabble League
Quiet Reading group
Homework Club & Staff Study Group
Paired Reading
Judging Panels: North East Book Awards & North East Teenage Book Awards
Author visits and workshops
Monitors and Prefects will be appointed from September 2008.

Investment and Refurbishment

We have just begun phase two of our four phase refurbishment plan.

During 2007/8, we have invested in a new Welcome Desk and enquiry area, modern shelving for the Fiction section redecoration.

During 2008/9 and with the help of a specialist design team and further investment, the Non-fiction area will be upgraded with modern shelving and a brand new layout.  We aim to complete our new ‘branding’ in time for September 2008, adopting a logo created for us by one of our Year 9 students.

Students and staff can access detailed and up to date information via the school intranet.
